Insist: village's name to remain 'Death to Jews'

The Simon Wiesenthal Center turned this morning (Tuesday) to the French Minister of the Interior demanding to change the name of a village located south of Paris called "Death to the Jews".

About a hundred miles south of Paris lies a small village called "La Mort a Juifs" which means death to the Jews. This name existed since the 14th century, probably from the time of the Crusades.

Recently there was a proposal of property for sale in the village, and this evoked the French media attention, while anti-Semitic factors used it for anti-Jewish preaching.

After it aroused resonance, Shimon Samuels of the Wiesenthal Center turned to Minister Brenner Casanov and wrote that he was "surprised to discover the existence of a village in France officially called 'Death to the Jews." It is shocking that the name has slipped under the radar during the seventy years since the liberation of France from the Nazi regime".

But Deputy Mayor of Kortamus, under whose jurisdiction the village lies, said to the IFP news agency that this is a ridiculous demand. "This name has always existed. Nobody has anything against the Jews, why change the name that has been around since the Middle Ages, we need to respect these old names".

In fact twenty years ago it was proposed to change the name, but the City Council rejected it.
