Litvish-Chassidish confrontation over academic studies at haredi institutions

Dispute between Hasidim and Litvaks over the struggle against the Academy: While the Hasidic daily Hamoida, posted a blanket ban on academic studies, in the Litvish Yated Ne'eman the ban was dropped in favor of 'necessary studies to achieve income' Inside: War of versions

Litvish-Chassidish confrontation over academic studies at haredi institutions

There is no unity in the war of Gedolei Yisroel against the Academy: it turns out the dailies Hamodia and Yated Ne'eman published different versions of the decisions of the Emergency Conference Against the Academy.

The bone of contention between the Hasidic Hamodia and the Litvish Yated Ne'eman, is: should the struggle be against academic institutions who do not operate in the spirit of Jewish tradition, or even against academic studies at hareidi institutions.

Hamodia newspaper posted the decisions as read at the meeting chaired by Hagaon Rabbi Chaim Kanievsky and the Viznitzer Rebbe by the council's secretary, Rabbi Avraham Rubinstein: "Education for Jewish girls from youth to graduation and the building of a bayit neeman be'Israel is entrusted by Gedolei Yisroel in recent generations only to haredi educational institutions guided by Maranan Verababn Gedolei Yisroel who behave in accordance with their instructions, who educate to fear of Heaven, love of Torah, emunah and bitachon and good middos without any mixtures of studies which are not compatible with the spirit of chachomim".

However the Yated Ne'eman text writes the decision as follows: "…was deposited by Gedolei Yisroel in recent times only by Beth Yaakov institutions that educate to pure fear of Heaven, love of Torah, emunah and bitachon along with subjects necessary to achieve a living." The change is in the last sentence.

So too, in Hamodia it was written in conclusion, "in the strengthening of the general public and in particular by public and educational officials, we can raise good and blessed generations who tread in the traditional path and an abundance of blessing and success in a permissible way without any obstacle."

Yated changed the wording: When we stand these days, on the eve of the days of Hanukkah that are able to arouse about the issues of education in purity and plug the loopholes, we will remain vigilant these days and thanks to them, we will merit, with G-d's help, raising righteous and blessed families, and install a possibility of livelihood in a permissible way without any obstacle in the traditional way".
