Huge Fire in Meah Shearim
Apartment complex went up in flame, tens of residents evacuated by the fire department.

At around 1:40 a fire broke out in an apartment complex in Meah Shearim, an older couple were injured in the fire. A 74 year old male with burns to 30% of his body and a 67 year old female suffering from burns to 20% of her body were taken by MDA to Hadassah Ein Kerem hospital.
This was a large scale fire necessitating no less than 18 fire trucks and the closing of Rechov Malechei Yisrael to traffic. It took firefighters an hour and a half to just to get the fire under control

The blaze spread to a number of apartments causing extensive damage. The roof has collapsed, the lower floors suffered massive water damage and there is serious concern that the entire building may collapse. The municipality has issued a temporary closure order , and hotel rooms have been procured for 23 families
.
It is not yet clear what caused the fire, though there is suspicion that it was due to an ill fated private matza baking venture

Deputy Mayor Yossi Deutsch in an interview with Behadrey Hareidim said,” There is no choice but to gate the area. The roof must be taken down and then the stability of the remaining structure needs to be assessed, only then will be able to see if the apartment complex is still inhabitable. We are not willing to put anyone in danger. The city’s social workers have leased hotel rooms for 23 families who definitely will not be able to sleep in their apartments tonight, and they are helping the rest of the families to the best of their ability

The municipality has contacted “Hekdesh Batei Warsaw “in order to begin filling insurance claims and renovations to enable the residents to return to their homes as soon as possible
.
