The Histadrut (union) in Israel announced an Egged bus strike for this Wednesday starting at 5:00 AM for the duration of one day. The strike will take place in Yerushalayim and the surrounding areas.

The upcoming strike is meant to protest the alleged abusive behavior employees have been enduring, for some time now, coming from the company’s administration. The strike is also directed towards the government that hasn’t been doing enough to safe-guard the rights of employees working for the country’s largest and most prestigious transportation company.

Chairman of the union Avi Nisenkorn said: “Egged is on the brink, its incomprehensible that a company which exists for over eighty years and has been providing the community with shuttling services from before the state was created-and its drivers are not treated fairly. Especially since its drivers perform their role securely, professionally and with loyalty”.

Chairman of the Union for Transport Workers, Avi Edri added: “We are facing a blunder that can dismantle Egged, a company that has a rich and long tradition. I hope the company’s administrators, as well as the government, will understand what is going on before it’s too late. They carry a reasonability not only for the drivers but also for the hundreds of thousands of Israelis that use egged busses daily”.
