A letter signed by Reb Chaim Kanievsky, published this morning (Wednesday) on the front page of the newspaper Yated Ne'eman, raises a storm.
"'Tel Talpiot' document published in Tishrei 2012 electric Chilul Shabbos issues were printed Heaven forbid. Such things must be taken out of the home due to אל תשכון באוהלך עולה, "writes Reb Chaim.
The 'Tel Talpit' document is a book published by the 'Chanichei Hayeshivos' Beis Din, headed by Hgr"m Gross.
It turns out that the background of the letter is the issue of religious controversy on a digital water kettle on Shabbos.
The document includes an article written by Rabbi Samson Frankel, Mo"tz in the Beis Din of Hgr"m Gross, permitting the use of a digital water kettle. On the other hand, the opinion of Chaim Kanievsky is determined on this issue: Use of a digital kettle is a desecration of Shabbos. Likewise is the opinion of Hgr"n Karelitz and his Beis Din.
Rabbi Gross claimed that he trusts the halachic opinion of Rabbi Frankel, who understands the issue to its depth.
B'Chadrei Charedim, recently learned that members of Reb Chaim Kanievsky's home came to Hgr"m Gross and commented on the severity of the issue. Hgr"m Gross told them that there is no reason on their part not to publish a clarification in the 'Yated', stating it is a mere sophistry article and should not be relied upon unlike arbitrates given by Gedolei Yisrael.
Indeed, household members of Reb Chaim Kanievsky waited a few days, hoping for a clarification publication, but when they understood that it will not come – Reb Chaim instructed to publish the sharp letter.
In response to the letter published today, Hgr"m Gross's associates said: "Any reasonable person understands what needs to be done."
Students and associates understood the message, and those of them who held a subscription at 'Yated', called the newspaper subscription department to cancel the subscription.
