"Schools will be required to study mathematics and languages"

Antwerp bewildered: the Supreme Court in Brussels decided all schools must teach subjects • Students who do not meet the tests - will be obliged to move schools • Jewish community accuses Moshe Aryeh Friedman • Friedman satisfied: "No doubt this is an unusual step and precedent" • Final and unchallengeable ruling • an urgent meeting at the local rabbi was convened

"Schools will be required to study mathematics and languages"

In an unprecedented move a Supreme Court Justice in Brussels, Grund Waterlie Hoff, published this afternoon that all private schools - haredi schools, are committed to learning the core curriculum.

In addition, the court refused the demand to cancel the appointment of Moshe Aryeh Friedman as representative of the general haredi public stating that Moshe Aryeh Friedman will continue to function as such.

Moshe Aryeh Friedman who is in Brussels, told Behadrey Haredim that the measure taken by the court was unusual and unprecedented. "Usually the judge orders the two sides for the arraignment of the verdict, and the judge himself explains the reasons that led him to rule as he did.

"In this case the judge decided as precedent not to call on the parties because of what was at the last hearing held a few weeks ago, where dozens of Antwerp residents arrived at the court to demonstrate their presence and put pressure on the judge," says Friedman.

Following the discussion two weeks ago, the judge said that he will announce his decision soon but will not conduct a hearing. "Nobody knew that today the court will announce the ruling," says Friedman, "I was told this morning and all other parties received the judgment by email."

"The judgment is most decisive and states that the matter cannot be appealed," says Friedman.

The judge upheld the decision of the Minister of Education not to enforce the law until the end of the school year, because the institutions administrators claim that there is not enough time to prepare the children for curriculum tests, but in the next school year Antwerp institutions will have to include curriculum studies.

Antwerp are still studying the ruling and its significance for the educational system. Veteran residents of Antwerp told us: "This ruling today is a direct result of the struggle waged by Haredi institutions against Friedman, his involvement in the case is the deciding factor, the judge himself said in the previous hearing that Friedman and the affair of refusal of institutions to accept his children to school, make Friedman a true representative to the court.

It is important to note that Friedman's children attend a haredi school which teaches core curriculum, and the judges took Friedman's children as an example the fact that there is no contradiction between religious learning and core curriculum.

In Antwerp itself, last night (Wednesday) city rabbis gathered at the local rabbi Hagaon Rabbi Aharon Schiff Av Beis Din of Antwerp under the titl : "For the future of our children in our city," the meeting decided to raise funds and major court costs, reportedly two hundred thousand Euros were raised.
