Money makes the world go around: Petro Poroshenko, oligarch whose fortune is estimated at $ 1.3 billion, who became a politician, won by an overwhelming majority in the elections held yesterday in Ukraine.

Petro Poroshenko, the new Ukrainian president has been dubbed "chocolate king" since he owns a chocolate factory, made his fortune from car and buses factories, from a TV station (Channel 5), a giant shipyard and other businesses, starring in the list of millionaires of "Forbes" magazine.

Poroshenko, 49 years old, previously served as Foreign Minister and Minister of Economy of Ukraine. At the outbreak of the uprising against President Viktor Yanukovych, Poroshenko was the only oligarch who clearly supported demonstrators against him in Kiev.

He owns the chocolate company "Roshen" - one of 20 leading chocolate makers in the world, with an estimated wealth of $1.3 billion. During the election campaign, Poroshenko promised his electors that he will strengthen economic and political ties with the West, despite the opposition of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

However, he expressed the hope that relations with Russia are rectifiable, since the neighboring power supplies most of the natural gas to Ukraine. It should be noted that in a survey conducted before the elections, about a quarter of those who intended to vote for him in one of the surveys, that they so it because it is a "lesser evil".

Rabbi Jonathan Markowitz, Chief Rabbi of Kiev, says this morning to Behadrey Haredim: "I believe the public has voted against the government that ruled until now, rather than personally for him. I believe he will focus now mainly on the economic situation of Ukraine and the security situation. He is getting an injured and battered country and will have to rebuild it. The working assumption is that if the economic and security situation improves there will be less riots."

Is he good for the Jews? Markowitz: "What is certain is that our situation will be better than it was until now. Till now there was lawlessness, extremist groups operated freely and thus the Jews are a goal which provokes interest, and therefore anti-Semitic groups took advantage of the chaos.

"He himself was never linked to the Jewish community, there are Russian tycoons here who do make contact with the Jewish community. I think he kept his distance from the Jewish community because in his family there are Jews, I believe that his father or grandfather was Jewish, and he kept trying to hide the fact so that the fact of his being a scion of Jews does not disturb him, basically he is not anti-Semitic, in his immediate circle he has many Jewish friends and Jewish tycoons."

"Last month President Shimon Peres and Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman met with Poroshenko secretly in Jerusalem," reveals Markowitz Chief Rabbi of Kiev.

U.S. President Barack Obama was one of the first to congratulate Poroshenko on his victory, and said he looks forward to working with the President-elect. He added that elections in Ukraine are another step towards the unification of the country – according to a statement from the White House.

During election day two people were killed, including an Italian photojournalist who was killed in Donetsk, where he arrived to cover the event. In addition, elections were held only partly the absence of 20% of voters who were registered in the previous elections. Almost two million voters who live in the Crimea which was annexed to Russia did not participate in the vote. Only those who kept their Ukrainian passport were allowed to vote, but they had to come to the polls across the border.
