Orthodox rabbi killed and the driver was sentenced to probation only

Orthodox community in Manchester shocked: 24-year-old driver who ran over to death two years ago, Rabbi Hyman Steinberg sentenced last Friday in court only suspended to probation and revocation, even though the driver admitted that he drove very fast and irresponsibly.
Son in-law of Rabbi Steinberg said that the accident occurred on the 82nd birthday of his father in law, when he was on his way to evening prayers on a rainy night. He said he and his son who was 4 years old were walking to synagogue when he suddenly heard a sudden stop and the thud, and saw a man landing near them.
The son in law said that under cover of darkness he did not notice who it was, but ran toward the man lying on the floor when he noticed his father in law. It turned out that the young driver drove too fast and hit Rabbi Steinberg walking on the sidewalk. The driver continued on his way and did not even stop to offer assistance.
Rabbi Steinberg hit his head and died shortly afterwards. Rabbi Steinberg was known as a respected figure in the community, helped anyone in need and even established a special Gemach for brides and grooms.
On Friday attorney of the driver succeeded in upseting the courtroom when justified lightest punishment by saying that that person is an elderly man of 83 who uses a cane, especially as the old man was dressed in black and it was difficult to distinguish him on the rainy night, the lawyer ignored the fact that his client was driving recklessly up on the sidewalk and there ran over Rabbi Steinberg.
The driver was sentenced to probation and negation, to the dismay of the Haredi community.
