The health ministry is taking pains to make sure that healthy whole wheat bread will soon be a possibility for all segments of society. It does not cost any more money to produce whole wheat bread than it does to produce white bread, yet the high prices make the regular consumption of the healthier product an impossible luxury for many.

But in order to make sure that an appetizing and good tasting produced will be produced there will be guidelines. The bread will carry the label, "efshari- bari" and will have to contain at least 80% whole wheat flour, not more than 400 mg of sodium for every 100 grams, and not more than 250 calories for a 100 gram serving.

This will be a battle against the bakeries who will lose revenues from the other healthy breads such as spelt, rye, multi grain, sourdough etc, since they will be forced to drop their prices on these breads to keep them marketable.

It seems likely that a compromise will be reached allowing for the price of the new bread to be set at slightly more expensive than the sliced white bread.
