Why Haredi Baalei teshuva make lower salaries

What problems do BT face when applying for college? ● High percentage have an income of 3000 NIS per month or less ● Differences between men and women: 9% of the men have a salary above 12000 NIS, as opposed to the women’s A new study brings all the details
Shiffi Haritan, כ"ד אב תשע"ו 28/08/2016 15:41

Nearly 260 Haredi Baalei teshuva were interviewed for a study, which showed data on very low-income rates. 46% of the women make less than 3000 NIS a month, and only 1% make higher than 12000 NIS. 21% of the Haredi Baalei Teshuva men also have an income lower than 3000 NIS a month. only 9% earn 12000 NIS or more.

The study was done in The Jerusalem Institute for Israel Studies, with the participation of the Haredi field of Joint Israel and the Netiot organization. The main obstruction for these women is the fact that the men want to invest in their Torah learning, whereas the women are expected to spend much of their time with the children- what makes the option of working full time very difficult.

Most of the participators have full high school education and some have a degree, yet the number of hours they can set aside for work does not allow them promotions or even settling into a steady job.

One of the problems the study came across is academic studies, for those who do not have a degree. Baalei teshuva who want to get a degree come across a problem, as one of the conditions set by the Council of Higher Education, allows acceptance into a non-mixed academy only to those who learned in a Haredi high school as proof that they need to study in a separate class.

As such, a Baal Teshuva does not fit the criteria. So too as to the requirements for scholarships, and more. The full study published by the researcher Asaf Malachi, advised, among other ideas, to change the requirements of acceptance to separate college programs so that Baalei Teshuva can take part.
