Nasi of Yeshivas Ponevitsh Hagaon Harav Eliezer Kahanoman who is heading to a dinner in America was forced to take a detour through Cyprus to avoid Tumas Meis.

Hagaon Harav Eliezer Kahanoman Nasi of the Ponevitsher Yeshiva who was heading to a dinner in America on behalf of the yeshiva took a long detour to avoid Tumas Meis. The Nasi first took off from a small airport in Haifa en route to Cyprus where he spent the night. The Nasi then headed to New York with the exception of a short stopover in Vienna. Also joining the Rav on this trip is his eldest son Harav Yosef Kahanoman.
The problem started with Recent construction at Ben Gurion International Airport which is raising a serious Shaila with regard to Cohanim flying over Tumas Meis. The construction which began a few weeks ago is causing some changes in the tarmac, especially for the direct flights from Israel to America.
The direct flights are being temporarily diverted to a different runway, which in turn alters the flights path out of the country. Instead of the usual route which takes the planes straight out to the sea rite after takeoff, there is a new temporary path, where planes first pass over the city of Cholon and its Beis Hachaim, Which is located just south of Tel Aviv, thereby causing a shaila of Tumas Meis.
To avoid the recent problem that cropped up, Cohanim are resorting to first flying to Cyprus through the small Haifa Airport, and only then flying to the U.S.
Sources tell ‘Bechdrei Chareidim’ That Harav Kahanoman specifically resorted to taking the long detour of first flying from Haifa to Cyprus and then to the U.S., in order to avoid Tumas Meis.
The ponevitsher Yeshias annual dinner is set to take place in borough park, in two weeks, with the participation of Roshei Yeshivos and Rabbonim from around the U.S.
