The committee for internal affairs headed by MK Dovid Amsalem approved on Monday that women will be included to the committee that chooses regional Rabbonim. Per the agreement that was reached with the head of the religious department, a woman representing the region or the town will be included to the deciding committee.

As previously reported here in “Chadrei Chareidim” following the request last week of Aryeh Deri minister of interior, the committee of internal affairs conveyed on the matter of choosing new regional Rabbonim.
However, the meeting exploded when MK Rachel Azaryah demanded that women be added to the committee that will be choosing the Rabbonim.

Also present at the meeting was MK Uri Maklev who Strongly opposed Azaryah’s request, saying “not everything that has a kippa needs interference”. Due to the disturbance, the session has been postponed.

The office for religious affairs and the Rabbanut Harashit reached an understanding that it would not be mandatory for women to partake in the choosing of the Rabbonim but the option would be available under certain circumstances for women to be part of the deciding committee. MK Yisroel Eichler preferred not support this compromise and chose to abstain. Speaking to “Chadrei Chareidim” MK Eichler lamented about the obsession to push for the integration of women in every spectrum, even in Rabbinical context.

In response MK Azaryah said “I thank the ministries of interior, justice and religious services who responded to my request which I brought up in the previous meeting of having appropriate women representation when choosing regional Rabbonim. Religious services are administered to both men and women in Israel. Perhaps even more to women because of the areas of mekvaos marriage and divorce. Therefor it is important that the appointing committee should also have appropriate women representation to make sure that the Rav chosen understands the needs of women”.

Azaryah added “in the body that chooses Rabbonim for cities there is already women representation, and we should also do so when choosing regional and town Rabbonim. When the committee has on it idlest two men, which are representatives of the Rabbanut Harashit, representation for women becomes necessary. The committee and minister of interior did well by leaving space for women representation.

The Torah and avodah movement put out a response saying. We applaud the departments of interior and religious affairs on the change that was done in allowing in appropriate women representation. The decision reflects part of the trend towards democratization and representation for the appropriate community in committees that appoint Rabbonim in particular and in religious regional councils in general. In the spirit of the high court’s decision, spurred by a petition the movement of Torah and Avodah gave in about “women representation in committees that appoint Rabbonim”.
