As part of his efforts to warm up to the Chareidi community, Meir of Yerushalayim Nir Barkat will pay a visit to the largest Yeshivah in Yerushalayim, and in Israel, the ‘Mir’.
The Meir will arrive at the Yeshivah together with his staff from city hall, and will be joined by the Yeshivas Roshei Yeshivah, and the Chareidi representatives from the city council, on the tour around the Yeshivah.
“Bechadrei Chareidim” was informed that this is the first time the Meir is visitng the ‘Mir’, and its coming as a prelude to his plans of renovating and upgrading the streets near the Yeshivah- which is spread out over the lion’s share of the Bais Yisroel neighborhood in Yerushalayim.
Although the Yeshiva did not voice any opposition to the Meirs upcoming visit, there is concern that extreme elements will show up and protest the Meir’s tour, similar to criticism leveled in the past when government officials toured Yeshivas.
As stated, in the past few months Meir Barkat has been making a great effort to warm up to the Chareidi community, including undertaking a series of agreements to preserve the status-quoe on sensitive topics such as chillul Shabbos.
